NAME
  lance - long, one-handed spear used in jousting or mounted combat

DESCRIPTION
  The lance is a type of spear used by cavaliers. It usually consists
  of a long wooden shaft with a sharp metal point.

  The combination of lance and stirrup gives an armored cavalier
  tremendous shock potential in battle, and also in the tournament
  joust, in which single knights seek to unhorse each other by holding
  their lances level and charging headlong at each other. The butt end
  of the shaft is couched in a leather rest attached to the saddle.

This may not be entirely clear: You MUST be mounted when using a lance, which restricts it's use inside buildings. An expensive workaround is to find or create a nexus into the building (or use some other teleportation) to pass the mount barrier. For example, if you use a nexus to go into Lord Agrippa's throne room, you can ride yoru horse/dolphin/wyrm/etc. around the castle, but not out of the castle. (You still can't go past the areas that are marked no-mount.)
