NAME
lore - improves one's ability to discover the true nature
of an item
SYNOPSIS
look <item name>
DESCRIPTION
Lore consists of the specific knowledge of myths and legends,
weapons, magical artifacts, and other useful tidbits of information.
When one is proficient in lore, it improves one's chances of
being able to identify an item's power and uses. Once you have
learned the basic proficiency of LORE, you need not utilize any
special commands to enact it. Just LOOK at an object and if
your LORE is successful, information similar to IDENTIFYing
the object will appear.
When you LORE an object, you will see a description similar to
the following, that provides detailed information about it.
You focus your powers of observation on a phoenix feather quill:
Item 'a phoenix feather quill' is type writing-instrument, alignment
500, made of organic, has keywords 'quill phoenix feather'.
This item weighs 0 stones and 4 pebbles, and is valued at 1,125 gp.
This level 45 item has the attributes: identified permanent wont-fuse
will-float no-steal
A phoenix feather quill is in excellent condition.
There are about 1 ounces of ink remaining.
*This item may be repaired 6 more times.
This quill has been crafted from a large, red, phoenix feather that
seems to flow through shades of red as if it were a flame. Despite
its fiery appearance, the feather is cool to the touch and is not
giving off any heat. The quill appears to have been enchanted to
provide an endless amount of red-tinted ink, for use in writing
letters and books.
For further information on the attributes of the item (such as the
"identified permanent wont-fuse will-float no-steal" shown above)
please see HELP OBJECT ATTRIBUTES.

When one isn't proficient in lore, one can just look at an item a lot of times and eventually identify it. Not worthwhile to practice unless your stats are maxed and you've got all your other skills/spells at 75%.

Lore doesn't cost spell points and can be used in no-magic rooms. This skill can identify objects that are on the floor. In these respects it Lore is more powerful than the Identify skill. One possible weakness is that proficiency seems to affect success by item level. So first class items are easy to lore without training. Higher level items are a different matter. Trainers can raise lore to 100%.
