TRAVEL
NAME
travel - information on how to get around in the world of Alyria
DESCRIPTION
In the world of Alyria, there are many ways to travel. You can simply
walk from place to place, via the directional commands (north, south,
east, west, etc.), you may MOUNT a horse (or perhaps a dragon!) and ride it
via vocal commands, you may hop on the next ferry or ship to another continent,
hitch a ride on a passing ship, cast a powerful magic teleportation spell,
or you might just sit on a magical carpet and fly to your destination!
MOUNTS
To control a mount, such as a horse, you may command the animal to
'walk', 'gallop', or 'run', followed by the <direction> you wish it to
move, via a VOCAL command. Remember, faster speeds will cause your mount
to tire more rapidly. A quick 'stop' or 'whoa' will get your mount to stop.
Mounts will attempt to follow roads and trails, if they are given a
vocal command while they are on such a road or trail and the direction
they are given will result in them moving next to a road or trail. They
will try to stay on the best road available but can be persuaded to
move to a less desirable path by stopping and reorienting them.
FLYING ITEMS
To use a magical carpet, broom, or other transportation-enchanted item,
you may control the item via VOCAL commands, such as 'fly <direction>'.
To get your transportation to stop, simply say 'stop'.
SHIPS
Ships allow one to sail the seas of Alyria, either as captain (if you own
a ship) or as a passenger. If you are interested in ship ownership, see
HELP SHIPS for more information.
There are two ferries that are sponsored by the Council of Seven that
regularly run between popular cities in Alyria, as well as the great
ship, the Merdraco, which runs a crescent circuit, stopping at the major
ports across the land. To use a ferry, go to the docks outside the specified
city and look for a green '4' against the docks, then 'SHIP BOARD <direction>'
to board that ship. Use 'SHIP EXIT <direction>' when you want to leave (but
make sure there's an adjacent dock).
The Hallowhold Ferry, manned by Ferrymaster Gallow, travels between Sigil on
the continent of Auryn, and Rune on the continent of Sepharia.
The Riddenmast Ferry, manned by Ferrymaster Uther, travels between
Tellerium on the continent of Avros, and Lowangen on the continent of Sepharia.
The Ship Merdraco, manned by Captain Pierot, travels from Rune, to Sigil,
to Pirate's Cove, to Tellerium, to Templeton, and back again.
WORLDGATES
Near most major cities and a few interesting landmarks, both on the physical
plane, the Great Alyrian Underground, and the faerie plane, lie curious
arrangements of large monolithic stones. These stone circles have been
magically charged to produce the mysterious portals known as Worldgates, that
appear and disappear as the phases of the twin moons, Trigael and Marabah,
wax and wane. See 'HELP WORLDGATES' for more information on these ethereal
portals.
TRANSPORTATION SPELLS
There are several spells that can be used by those with the knowledge of
matters mystical, or by those less mystically inclined, so long as the proper
spell scroll is used. These spells allow for magical transportation from
point A to point B. Teleport, Blink, Vacuum Invocation, Nexus, Warp, and
Gate Travel are all spells which enable the caster (and sometimes his
formation) to transport about in the blink of an eye. These spells may also
be enchanted in certain objects, either to good or bad effect.
MISCELLANEOUS
Various other methods of transporation exist throughout the world of Alyria.
Certain magical gemstones, found at many questmasters, enable you to return
to the questmaster in the blink of an eye. Novice Adventurers start with a
gemstone that will return them to their hometown, limited by charges.
In the Townes of New Rigel and Lowangen, you can seek out their hot
hot air balloon platforms and travel between the two cities via air travel.
If you are in the Towne of Xaventry, an ogre-powered catapult may be
available, to fling you about the city. Ganuk, the Gnome Mechanic, offers
transportation to various cities and locations via his wonderous tunneling
Iron Worm out of his office in the Towne of Rune. Adventurers may also seek
out the Mad Mole in Vesivius on the continent of Beltane.
