When one isn't proficient in lore, one can just look at an item a lot of times and eventually identify it. Not worthwhile to practice unless your stats are maxed and you've got all your other skills/spells at 75%.
Lore doesn't cost spell points and can be used in no-magic rooms. This skill can identify objects that are on the floor. In these respects it Lore is more powerful than the Identify skill. One possible weakness is that proficiency seems to affect success by item level. So first class items are easy to lore without training. Higher level items are a different matter. Trainers can raise lore to 100%.
