FLEEING from COMBAT
NAME
flee - run away from a combat situation
SYNOPSIS
flee
flee <direction>
DESCRIPTION
Once you start a fight, you can't just walk away from it. If the
fight is not going well, you can attempt to flee. If a direction is
specified, you will attempt to flee once in that direction. If no
direction is specified, you will pick whatever direction you see
first, and flee that way.
If you lose link during a fight (disconnect), your character will
keep fighting, but will automatically attempt to flee from time
to time.
If your courage is low, you may attempt to flee if the fight appears
to be going badly (for instance, if you are hit especially hard
one round, or something of the sort).

Dizzy rooms make you flee in unpredictable directions, even if you specify the direction you want to flee. A good thing to remember if you are in an area with a lot of traps (Verity, PG).
Normally, if you specify a direction to flee, you will flee in that direction without fail (assuming it is a viable escape route). If you type "flee" without an argument, there is a high chance of failure. The exception to this is if you are in a dizzy room or a darkened room, or if you are blind. In these cases, typing "flee" alone will automatically cause you to flee in a random direction whereas "flee (direction)" will have a much higher chance of failure and still choose a random direction anyway.
