It's an antique telescope, used by mariners at sea.  It smells faintly of 
seagull.  It's a long, cylindrical bronze tube, actually two tubes, made 
so that one can slide within the other.  The collapsing tubes permit the 
telescope to be placed in the pocket of a coat or something until needed.  
There are oddly shaped glass orbs at the ends of the tubes that magnify 
the image of whatever it is aimed at.
