A dusty book sits here in a larger pile of dirt and grime. With its yellow pages and curled up ends it appears to be almost useless. But there's something weird about the inscription, it looks very familiar. You study the shape and the edges of the inscription, burning it into your mind. Perhaps further examination will be necessary.

You brush some dust off the cover of this book and read the title, "Pet Care and Handling." This handy little book looks as if it has seen better days. The pages are annotated with words and inept drawings of werecats and jackalopes. There is a sticker on the cover reading: "BookMart, Used, 5 gp" "Of all creatures that can be kept as pets, the common cat is probably the most well-suited to indoor life. A basically lazy animal by nature, the cat will be quite happy to lurk in the shadows of your home and watch you as you go about your business. As they take care of themselves, there is no need to be overly concerned in tending them, though they do require food, water, and sanitation. Cats can be quite playful when riled up, and annoying when they get bored, and they are a contrary beast. "Dogs are clowns; playful, yet noisy. Fish like water, lizards are experts at standing still, and birds are noisy and flighty. "Elves have been kept as pets in some regions of the world since ancient times. A well-trained elf will be handy with tools around the house, industrious in crafting articles for trade, and keeps itself fairly clean, preferring to bathe in cold running streams. An elf with a bad attitude on the other hand will be moody, conniving, prone to stealing your shoes rather than making you new ones, and an overall nuisance to keep. If you have the misfortune of purchasing such a creature by mistake, take it back immediately and get a refund. "If you own a lot of land and have the stall to keep it, a minotaur may be the pet for you. They are fun to watch as they scamper in the fields, are generally cheerful to be around, and when you get tired of the creature, who doesn't like a nice steak on the grille? "A Fey can be an interesting pet, though they are troublesome to feed. A small herd of cattle or other farm animals will be necessary if you intend to keep a flock of Fey. On the good side, Fey are instinctively friendly, as this is how they lure their prey, and can be sent out to raid the local regions for loot when rent is due. "Humans make perfectly lousy pets. They are lazy, sloppy, complain all the time, are never happy with what you give them, and tend to scream when you lock them in their cages at night. If you simply must keep a human for a pet, train it to do some work around the place, give it a job to keep it happy and tire it out, and watch it carefully. Humans have even been known to rise to positions of some importance when they have mastered some trade." --Garlag Venator, Dracon Petmaster of Vir
