The belt is made of silmarilium, an incredibly lightweight, yet durable
(and practically indestructible) metal alloy.  The process for making the
rare alloy was discovered several hundred years ago when a silmaril a
dwarven worker had carelessly placed on a shelf fell into an active
crucible.  The crucible contained a rather unusual mixture of several rare
metals (the dwarven blacksmith had been trying to create gold).  The magical
properties of the silmaril were passed to the metal as the gemstone melted
at an extreme high temperature, and thus was silmarilium born.
